The history of the cloister:
Where Luther’s wife once lived

Today, only the old masonry of the central building bear testimony to the once stately equipped Cistercian Abbey Marienthron in Nimbschen, which outlasted time in a small park of huge beeches and oaks. The fact that this place by the side of the river Mulde is still renown today is owed to its unique history. This is the place where Katharina von Bora once led the life of a Cistercian nun. After she came in touch with the teachings of Martin Luther, she made a courageous decision in 1523 and fled to Wittenberg with eight other sisters under the famous reformers’ protection.

Two years after her escape Katharina von Bora became Luther's wife after she had rejected all other wedding aspirants. As a mother of six joint children, she founded the still growing »Lutheran« pedigree. And on top of this, she proved to be a diligent manager of the household budget, the good-hearted soul of the Lutheranian household and a passionate gardener.

The visitor to the ruins of her previous homestead finds the historic site of the Nimbschen estate right next to the old walls of the abbey. The estate and the former mews and storehouses have become a particularly hospitable place: Hotel Kloster Nimbschen. The buildings have been restored with much effort, and a lot of attention to detail and the connection of historic ambience and new experience concepts has created an extraordinary atmosphere – not only for vacation but also for cultural and other events.

Today, the estate offers its guests state of the art variety, indulgence and comfort. If you are passionate about traces of history, you will find your luck not only in the nearby ruin of the abbey but also in the surroundings: in the old streets of the central Saxonian towns of Grimma, Leisnig, Colditz and many other places.

Much more than just a hotel

In spite of its distinctive tracks of history, the old Nimbschen estate has become an entirely new place. Where crops were stored, cattle were bred, and the harvest was processed more than a one hundred years ago, nowadays our guest's scrimmage. The former access yard has become a small park, in the huge barn we opened our culinary school and built a bowling lane, meetings are being held in the mansion, and the long barn hosts grand feasts and events.

And this is by far not the end of opportunities: we also offer in-house restaurants and festival rooms, a miniature golf facility and the adjacent fitness club, the party location »Plan B« and of course the nearby jetty at the river Mulde.

By the way: as our guest you can choose to stay in our midst (in the 4-star hotel) or with a little distance (in the guest house). Whatever you desire.
